Replaced Components
The 2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 is built with the following suspension components:
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Hydraulic Struts (x4)- a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted onto a strut that uses pressurized hydraulic fluid as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These struts are controlled by the suspension control module, which is also responsible for redistributing hydraulic fluid to the struts as a means of weight distribution while cornering. All hydraulic springs go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Height Sensors (x4) - a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, it will eventually wear out.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Hydraulic Lines- tubes that run from a hydraulic pump to the hydraulic struts, which carry pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic struts in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Hydraulic Pump- if your Mercedes has hydraulic suspension instead of air suspension, then the hydraulic steering pump will also serve as the reservoir for the hydraulic fluid going into the struts.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Dryer- prevents moisture build-up inside of hydraulic suspension parts.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 Suspension Control Module- a computer that is responsible for the operations of the hydraulic suspension system and maintaining the vehicle's correct ride height.
2000-2006 Mercedes Benz CL500 O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the hydraulic suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the hydraulic lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any hydraulic suspension system.
Suspension Failure Signs
Early diagnosis of a bad suspension is critical to maintaining the overall functionality of the 2000-2006 Mercedes-Benz CL500. Look for these classic signs that indicate the suspension is leaking or failed. The most noticeable is a sudden height variance between different sides of the CL500. This may look like one sagging end, one inflated end, a shifting lean from side to side, or a squatting down appearance. These height imbalances will wear out the air compressor from applying too much strain. If the air compressor has already ceased working or is running too often then suspension failure will advance. At this point, a suspension warning message will illuminate on the dashboard.
OEM Replacement Cost
- Front Hydraulic Strut Assemblies ($2,000/strut) +
- Rear Hydraulic Strut Assemblies ($1,700/strut)+
- Hydraulic Pump ($1,300)+
- Hydraulic Reservoir ($400)
Total: Over $9,000 (but that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors)
Aftermarket Replacement Cost
New, aftermarket replacement parts are not available.
The assorted parts that make up the hydraulic suspension system on the 2000-2006 Mercedes-Benz CL500 must always work together. When one part breaks, the rest of the system stops working properly. Strutmasters' air-to-non-air suspension conversion kit, manufactured in America, gets rid of this dependency for good. The kit comes complete with one custom-designed suspension light fix module and four completely pre-assembled coilover struts that use cold-wound steel coil springs. The quality parts are more reliable than the originals; Strutmasters guarantees it with a 1-year warranty.
Customers appreciate the detailed instructions and online installation videos that help guide a smooth repair. For further assistance, ASE-certified experts are available over the phone. The kit is a direct replacement (no modifications are needed) and can be installed in as little as one hour per wheel. Typically, the suspension warning light turns off after about thirty minutes. Lastly, the cost of the kit is a fraction of the prices of dealership direct replacement and individual part replacement.
