Replaced Components
The 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) is built with the following suspension components: 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Electronic Shocks (x2)- shocks abosrbers whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module in order to ensure proper wheel-to-ground contact. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Air Springs (x4)- (models with air suspension only) commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Struts (x2)- a type of shock absorber; has metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.; the air spring assembled on top of the strut is commonly referred to as an air strut. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Height Sensors (x4)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air struts which carry pressurized air to the air bags. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Solenoids (x4)- usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height. 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.
Suspension Failure Signs
It’s an unfortunate truth that air suspensions are doomed to fail due to the delicate nature of their components. High cost and high frequency of repair to the AirMatic air suspension is a common complaint amongst 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 owners. The key to keeping costs down is early detection of failing components. If you notice any symptoms of an air suspension problem you’ll want to diagnose and repair them quickly to avoid additional effects on other parts of your Mercedes like the tires or battery. Let’s look at your symptoms. If your E500 is able to maintain proper ride height but you have a suspension warning light on the dash and/or your compressor seems to be running often then your first step should be to check the relay and fuse. However, if your Mercedes is sagging or leaning to one side then it’s likely you have a leak somewhere in the air system. Run soapy water over all the air components including seals, joints, and air lines to locate the leak(s). Suspension issues are a serious safety issue and should be repaired quickly to avoid further damage to your E500.
OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Strut Assemblies ($1,240/strut) ) + Rear Electronic Shocks ($180/shock) + Rear Air Spring ($380/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($740) = Over $4,300 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors). SOME PARTS UNAVAILABLE!
At Strutmasters, suspensions are our only focus; in fact we invented the air suspension conversion, which is why we are called The Suspension Experts. We understand the complicated air suspension system on your Mercedes Benz E500 and we understand how stressful a large repair can be on your wallet and on your life. The delicate nature of the AirMatic suspension components means that if one part breaks or fails, the entire system cant perform properly. We wanted a better solution so came up with an air to non-air conversion kit that eliminates your dependence on every single (expensive) air part. Our kit, for your E500, includes two pre-assembled front coil-over struts with premium steel coil springs, two rear premium steel coil springs with mounts, and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear. We are the only company that uses premium cold wound coil springs, which ensure maximum durability and ride quality and are backed by our lifetime warranty. Our kit is easily installed in about one hour per wheel, with the help of easy to follow instructions and installation videos. The kit saves you time, frustration (no more trips to the dealership), and a ton of money. You have three choices when it comes to repairing your Mercedes air suspension: repairing your air suspension system at the Mercedes Benz dealer, installing aftermarket air suspension parts on your E500 piece-by-piece, or getting rid of the problematic air ride and installing a Strutmasters coil-over suspension conversion kit.
