Replaced Components
The 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is built with the following suspension components: 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Active Hydraulic Struts (x4) - A long tube (similar to a shock absorber) that fills with hydraulic fluid forced in at varying rates of pressure determined by sensors on the vehicle. The strut is a perch for a metal coil spring, which helps support the weight of the vehicle. The struts on this vehicle are considered "active" because they can be adjusted hundreds of times a minutes electronically. Much like a shock absorber, the strut dampens vibration and bouncing caused by travel on rough road surfaces. 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Height Sensors (x4) - A linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle that electronically measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Hydraulic Lines- Lines that carry fluid from a hydraulic pump to the vehicle's active struts in order to adjust the height of the vehicle. 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Hydraulic Pump- A mechanical pump that delivers hydraulic fluid to the active suspension components. The pump can burn up prematurely when leaks in the suspension system cause fluid levels to get too low. 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Suspension Control Module- A computer responsible for the operations of the active hydraulic suspension system and maintaining the vehicle's correct ride height. 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Rubber O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the system, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the hydraulic fluid lines connect. Bad Rubber O-rings cause leaks in the system and leads to part failures.

Suspension Failure Signs
Look for these indicators that the factory active suspension system in the 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is going bad: A sudden loss of three to five inches of ride height in either the front, rear or entire vehicle. A suspension warning light, at times with a chiming noise, is another sign. Sudden loss of power steering is another indicator of a problem. Vehicle owners can check for extremely low fluid levels in the hydraulic reservoir/pump; leaks around the struts themselves; or leaks at connection points in the hydraulic fluid lines. Experienced technicians tell us that when one major component of the system has failed, the others are right behind it. A complete overhaul of the factory suspension system on this vehicle can cost in the $9,000 to $11,000 range with Original Equipment parts and labor at the dealer. The high cost of suspension repairs on the SL55 is exactly why the Strutmasters suspension conversion kit is such a popular alternative.

OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Hydraulic Strut Assemblies ($1,790/strut) ) + Hydraulic Pump ($1,940) = TOTAL: Over $9,000 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ Hydraulic Strut Assemblies ($850/strut) ) + Hydraulic Pump ($1,230) = TOTAL: Over $4,600 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
When one component of the "Active Body Control" hydraulic suspension suspension system goes bad, the rest of the system follows suit. This is no different for the 2007-2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550. Strutmasters built its active hydraulic suspension conversion system to save SL550 owners time, frustration, and money versus a factory system that fails over and over. Our product is manufactured in the USA and comes complete with one custom-designed suspension light fix module and four pre-assembled coil over struts that bolt right in place of the factory components. Customers appreciate the detailed instructions and online installation videos that guide the repair. If further assistance is needed, Strutmasters' technicians are available to answer questions and provide support. We use dual-action premium coil springs which eliminate the need of installing aftermarket anti-sway bars -- a time savings of more than 10 labor hours alone! Our conversion system allows Mercedes owners to enjoy these wonderful vehicles for many more years WITHOUT spending a fortune!
